Today, we will expand on the concept of consciousness. What is consciousness ? Consciousness is awareness. Consciousness is awareness of self, others, the reality of the world and ultimately the reality and nature of the spirit. How does consciousness evolve ? Often through human suffering. You are thinking of a quote that you came across recently in reply to the question ‘is suffering necessary’? and the answer was to the effect that suffering can make us deeper, more aware and more compassionate people and therefore more spiritual people.
Bearing in mind that the human being is essentially a spirit who has entered matter and who is trying to evolve spiritually so that reunification with Godhead can be achieved, suffering can be a useful spiritual tool in that it dismantles the ego and brings in awareness of a greater reality. That is not to say that suffering is desirable in any way. If awareness can be achieved without suffering, this is a far more desirable outcome. However the reality is that ego, personality and conditioning can imprison the soul to such an extent that only when these vestiges of the human condition break down, is the greater reality of the spirit allowed to infiltrate the consciousness of the individual. Of course, this may be a long and painful process and acceptance of a more spiritual reality may sometimes take all of a human lifetime (or a number of lifetimes).
It is important not to underestimate the power of the personality and the ego. In fact the great challenge for many souls is to bring the personality into the spirit. Much of western life is fertile ground for the ego and the personality to indulge its every whim as we see from the excesses that are evident in many quarters of society. On a more fundamental level this brings in a certain spiritual bankruptcy as the human being devoid of and separated from any spiritual training or inclination tries to fill spiritual needs with worldly goods and services. This may even take the form of ‘spiritual materialism’ where religion is packaged and consumed without any spirituality or reflection. You are thinking of at least one established church that has a long and sad history in this regard and yes, you are correct.
The human ego has a considerable capacity to avoid spiritual growth and this avoidance takes many forms. You are asking yourself what is the point in all of this. You are afraid that you are simply another new age philosopher writing to further indulge the spiritual materialism of your culture and your society, that being the most affluent corner of the world. Well we have touched on this before and I want to remind you that the wealthy west has the power to change the world and in fact the future of the world and all the souls therein is entirely dependent on the will of the west. The west can create or destroy and forces in spirit who watch over the earth realm are concerned, therefore we are willing and inclined to promote a ‘new’ spirituality in the west and yes we work through those who are inclined and ready to receive us and what we have to say, so having eased your doubts about your role and its purpose we will continue.
You feel the word ‘Love’ coming through and you know we are talking about spiritual love and you know that the greatest attribute of the evolved soul is the capacity to feel love and as a visual metaphor, I am showing you a luxuriant plant that sends out shoots in all directions and so it is with the evolved soul who can truly feel God’s love, for to feel God’s love or spiritual love if you wish is to feel compassion and to feel compassion for all living things is to truly promote the spiritual evolution of mankind.
Compassion in the hearts of those who have power and influence will change many things. It will not convert the hearts of criminals and thieves in one day, but it will begin to address the core delusions of ego driven government and business. It will redress the malign depreciation of family values and its effect on society as a whole. By establishing spiritual thinking and compassion as core values, it will ease the urge to selfishness and dehumanization, issues that alienate and cause the alienated to seek revenge either consciously or unconsciously.
What of the tyrants and the despots who rule outside the democratic west you ask. I say to you that there are few tyrants whose rule is not bolstered by the flawed and self centred policies of western government. Policies that promote unscrupulous wealth are merely an extension of the human ego. Tyrants exist but their influence can be greatly moderated by the compassion and responsibility of others.
